Neck Pain

Common Causes of Neck Pain

Did you know that your neck, also known as the cervical spine, supports the full weight of your head? That is roughly 10-12 pounds for the average adult! The neck is also a very flexible part of your body, therefore it is prone to injuries and pain. Neck pain is very common, particularly among those of us who do a lot of repetitive movement, spend extended periods of time sitting, work at a computer, or spend time looking at our smartphones. Neck pain can be caused by an injury or accident, growing older, or just daily life.

Sedentary for long periods

A Healthy “C” Curve

It is important to be aware of the amount of curvature in your neck, as it is highly important to the overall health of your spine. With the amount of time Americans spend looking at their cell phones and computers, it is becoming more common for people to lose some of the healthy curve in their neck. A healthy curve in the cervical spine should resemble the shape of the letter “C”. The more prolonged time you spend looking down at your cell phone or at a computer screen, it is more likely that your neck could start to have less of a curved “C” shape and become straighter. When this happens, x-rays may reveal that the disc space between vertebrae has decreased, or started to created a wedge-like shape, causing greater pressure between joints and a higher likelihood to see premature degeneration, impair the nervous system, and feel neck pain.

At Gonstead Family Chiropractic, we want to get to the source of your neck pain and prevent degeneration. The doctor will discuss with you how neck pain has impacted your life, perform a series of examinations, and x-rays when necessary, to determine the condition of your spine and the best type of treatment. Once the doctor has reviewed the findings of the exam, he will use the Gonstead Technique to perform a very specific, accurate, and precise adjustment to the cervical spine.
