Causes of Tension Headaches
A large number of headaches are a result of muscle tension in the neck. Many Americans live less active lives than in the past and spend large portions of the day being sedentary. This can greatly contribute to joint irritation and muscle tension, leading to a headache. Other activities that can create muscle tension causing headaches include prolonged use of cell phones, working on a computer for long periods of time, repetitive motion in the upper body, poor posture, driving for hours without rest, sleeping on your stomach, or even clenching your jaw while sleeping or feeling stressed.
Another type of headache many Americans suffer from is a migraine headache. These usually present as throbbing, intense headaches accompanied by sensitivity to noise or light as well as nausea. Symptoms may last for a few hours or up to a few days and they can occur as little as one time per year or even several times a month. Things that trigger a migraine can vary from lack of sleep, strong odors, stress, changes in the weather, flickering lights, or neck pain. Many sufferers of migraine headaches seek relief by getting chiropractic adjustments. A misalignment in the C1 or C2 vertebrae can impair brainstem and spinal cord communication and increase the likelihood a migraine will occur. By getting a chiropractic adjustment to these vertebrae, you can decrease the frequency of migraine headaches.
